There is a new site I've discovered
recently that is so terrific I'm going to focus on it this
month. It's the Librarians' Index to the Internet. You can
find the web site at http://lii.org/
or you can join an e-mail list (at the web site) they call
their "Current Awareness Service" that gives a weekly
highlight of the top twenty new sites added to the index.
All resources on the LII are selected and evaluated by librarians
for their usefulness to users of public libraries. It is searchable,
annotated, and currently contains more than 5600 entries.
Some of the annotated sites listed
in the last few weeks of the Current Awareness Service are
(I'm not including the full annotation for space reasons):
*Power Reporting - http://powerreporting.com/
Subtitled resources for journalists, this directory is useful
for laypersons, as well as reporters.
*British History 1700-1900: Child
Labour - http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/IRchild.main.htm
*Internet History Sourcebooks Project
- http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/
As a site which contains collections of public domain and
copy-permitted historical tests," this is great for finding
primary historical resources.
*Pony Express - http://www.ccnet.com/~xptom/frm-history.html
*Stories from the Gold Rush - http://www.si.edu/postal/gold/gold2.html
An interesting perspective on the discovery of gold in Alaska
*The International Museum of the
Horse - http://www.imh.org/imh/imhmain.html
*Island of Freedom - http://www.island-of-freedom.com/
This site contains brief biographical entries for significant
theologians, philosophers, poets, composers, and artists throughout
history.
And that's just a smattering from the
e-mails. Check out this site. Sign up for the notification
service. This one's on my bookmark list!
