Monthly Programs: WRW's
monthly programs address the needs of both the published and
unpublished author in topics ranging from writing a dynamite
first chapter to handling rejection letters, and from historical
accuracy in costumes to forensic investigation of a murder scene.
Guest speakers include editors, agents, and local experts, as
well as WRW's own authors.
Mini-Workshops: Drawing from the experience
and expertise of its published authors, WRW holds several workshops
each year designed especially for the new or unpublished writer.
These workshops cover the nuts-and-bolts of writing a novel.
PLEASE NOTE:
Due to the professional nature and mature content of WRW
programs, and consistent with RWA guidelines, we request all
program attendees be over the age of eighteen. If childcare
isn't a feasible option, please remember that all programs are
recorded and may be borrowed from the WRW library. See Julie
Stewart for details.
April 2005
Meeting Date: April 16, 2005, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Bethesda/Chevy Chase Regional Service Center
4805 Edgemoor Lane
Bethesda, Maryland
240-777-8200
(The Center is conveniently located above a 1,000 space County parking garage. Parking is free on weekends. It is also at the Bethesda Metro (Red Line), with both Ride-on and Metrobus service. Directions below.)
Morning: Elaine English is both a media and publishing lawyer and a literary agent. She also serves as WRW’s Counsel, and has since 1987. In the morning, Elaine will talk about the legal issues writers must deal with during their careers. She will cover such topics as the various kinds of contracts we will be asked to sign, as well as other legal issues we deal with regularly, such as copyright, fair use, internet law, and potential international legal issues. She’s also willing to answer any specific questions that you might bring with you. You can email them to her in advance at ElaineEngl@aol.com (just make sure you identify them as potential questions for this workshop).
Elaine is the Managing Partner of Graybill & English, LLC, a law firm based in Washington, D.C., and its affiliated literary agency, The Graybill & English Literary Agency. As an agent, Elaine represents only commercial fiction, including mysteries, romance and women’s fiction.
Afternoon: After a break for lunch, we warmly welcome accountant Bill Gruen to help demystify the world of taxes for the writer. Bill is the CPA for Graybill and English, among others, and is well versed in the various needs of writers throughout the stages of their career. With second careers, home offices, internet commerce, and the complexities of royalty statements, it seems like our tax forms are worse than ever before. Bring your questions!
Bill has 20+ years of experience as a tax accountant working with sole proprietors and small businesses. He is a Certified Financial Planner and the founder of a small CPA firm in Tenleytown, D.C. Bill is a graduate of Dartmouth College and University of the District of Columbia (accounting), with National Honors on CPA exam. He is a former middle and high school history teacher and the current father of four teenagers and husband of an occasionally voracious reader of romance novels.
Look forward to seeing you there—Robin Allen,
